It's up to your GM whether they think you would have to let go of your staff briefly in order to be able to get the other items in hand, or they let you do it without needing to drop it. This means you need to get some mistletoe and a shamrock into that hand as well. Strictly, a cleric's holy symbol is only a focus for your cleric spells, so cannot be used to replace the other material components for this druid spell you have learned. Since the quarterstaff is a material component of the spell, by the rules as written you can perform the somatic components while using the hand to hold the quarterstaff. It is then clarified that this can be the same hand that is being used to manipulate material components:Ī spellcaster must have a hand free to access these components, but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.Ĭomponents: V, S, M (mistletoe, a shamrock leaf, and a club or quarterstaff) If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures. The quarterstaff is a material component of the spell so you can use the same hand to provide somatic components for Shillelagh.Īs a general rule about somatic components: weapon as a spellcasting focus for your spells. If the quarterstaff is your spellcasting focus, as would be the case if you use the magic item Ruby of the War Mage (XGtE 138 and quoted below) for example, you could cast shiellelagh including the somatic components with the hand holding the quarterstaff since the quarterstaff would then substitute for the material components. Therefore, you must doff your shield to cast shillelagh on the quarterstaff. The hand holding the weapon is not considered free for the purposes of providing components. You require a free hand to access the material components and the only eligible target is a held quarterstaff or club. ( Emphasis mine) What this all means for you but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components. ![]() ![]() Material components can be accessed with the same hand as the hand used for somatic components according to the Spellcasting rules in the Player's Handbook:Ī spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell’s material components. Mistletoe, a shamrock leaf, and a club or quarterstaff You don't need a second free hand, but you do need one Shillelagh is not a cleric spell for you so a holy symbol cannot be used as a spellcasting focus, you must use the material components of. You can use a Holy Symbol (see "Equipment") as a spellcasting focus for your cleric spells. Your Spellcasting Focus feature says the following: ![]() Here's the rest: You could not use a holy symbol for shillelagh This spell falls off much sooner too, as you need a non-magical club to make use of this. Was only saying for those who place their Druid focus in hand.Short answer: Not while your shield is donned I think Magic Weapon on the fighter with a greatsword would be a better use of a 1st level spell slot than Shillelagh on the druid, even against the enemies listed here. Without a shield it's a really really bad option. In PnP, the target weapon is also the material component, and a hand that is holding the material component can perform S components, so you don't need a free hand to cast the spell. Which means inventory flipping is required to use the 5e druid standard loadout of shillelagh and wooden shield. A hand is required to hold the target staff/club. Only saying it so the option is known.)Ĭompletely not the issue - Solasta requites a free hand for S components. ( At worst, the need for a focus can be removed in the settings, but that does not nullify the design debate or default user-friendly question of course. Shillelagh Spells Rules Create A Spell Browse Homebrew Shillelagh Level Cantrip Casting Time 1 Bonus Action Range/Area Touch Components V, S, M Duration 1 Minute School Transmutation Attack/Save Melee Damage/Effect Bludgeoning The wood of a club or quarterstaff you are holding is imbued with nature's power. ![]() A good dual class that i personally like is Shadowdancer 13/Cleric. Cleric/Thieves that wish to power play can, in BG2, focus in the staff and use Staff of the Ram for the backstab for tons of damage. Reminder that the Druid focus does NOT need to be in hand : it can be placed in the Utility slot (where potions go). You can conjurate a club with the lvl 1 spell Shillelagh, but any club that you use will do.
